TotalEnergies (TTE.US) partners with Mistral: 100 million euros bet on AI exploration, European "sovereign AI" implemented in core energy scenarios
TotalEnergies (TTE.US) will collaborate with French artificial intelligence startup Mistral AI to leverage AI technology to enhance its oil and gas exploration capabilities and extend the lifespan of existing oil fields.
According to Jin Tong Finance APP, TotalEnergies (TTE.US) will cooperate with French artificial intelligence startup Mistral AI to enhance its oil and gas exploration capabilities through artificial intelligence and extend the lifespan of existing oilfields. In a statement on Tuesday, both parties stated that they will develop proprietary cutting-edge models based on decades of geological science data and plan to invest over 100 million euros (about $115 million) in the project within three years.
Mistral positions itself as a European “sovereign AI” alternative, benchmarking itself against major U.S. competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic PBC. The company focuses on integrating AI into existing business processes and in recent months has signed partnership agreements with several major European enterprises, including BNP Paribas SA and Stellantis NV.
The company operates in 20 countries, serving over 125 enterprise clients, including Airbus, ASML, and HSBC, and is expected to surpass $1 billion in annual recurring revenue this year. Samsung’s lead role continues the pattern of strategic investments in Mistral from semiconductor supply chain investors, following ASML’s previous lead in the Series C round.
TotalEnergies Chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanné stated that exploration and reservoir engineering are key areas where AI empowers traditional energy businesses and creates maximum value. This initiative not only enhances the competitiveness of the company’s core business but also helps strengthen the autonomy and technological resilience of the European digital ecosystem. Mistral co-founder and CEO Arthur Mensch added that this collaboration fully demonstrates the industrial application prospects of the most advanced, customizable AI models in tackling demanding scientific and energy challenges.
This year, the importance of technological sovereignty has attracted significant attention. The United States previously ordered Anthropic to suspend foreign nationals’ access to its advanced Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models, triggering warnings from U.S. allies about the risk of over-reliance on a handful of American service providers.
Earlier this month, Mistral completed a €3 billion financing round at a valuation exceeding €21 billion, led by Samsung Electronics, with funds to be used for AI model development and building computational infrastructure.
