Canada Secures Nearly CA$500 Billion in New Investment at Major Summit in Toronto

11:42 AM EDT, 09/15/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Nearly CA$500 billion in new investment commitments are set to flow into Canada following the country's first investment summit, Prime Minister Mark Carney's office said on Tuesday, underscoring strong investor confidence in the economy. The investment commitments are almost half of Prime Minister Carney's target to attract CA$1 trillion in new investment in Canada over the next five years as the country seeks to promote international trade and investment. Of that CA$1 trillion target, Canada aims for around half to be private investments, said Carney at a press conference at the two-day Canada Investment Summit in Toronto that ends Tuesday. As part of Canada's efforts to reduce its dependency on trade with the United States, Carney said he will seek an alliance with the European Union on sectors such as energy, critical minerals, space technology, Artificial Intelligence. It will be a "unique" alliance, according to Carney. This week, Carney is set to address the European Parliament in Strasbourg and attend European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's State of the EU address.
