Sector Update: Consumer Stocks Fall Tuesday Afternoon

01:46 PM EDT, 09/15/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Consumer stocks fell Tuesday afternoon with the State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLP) dropping 0.5% and the State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLY) declining 1.4%. Redbook US same-store sales rose by 8.5% from a year earlier in the week ended Sept. 12 after an 8.3% year-over-year increase in the previous week. Redbook noted inconsistent sales as the back-to-school season transitioned into the fall shopping period, with some companies using AI technology to increase demand for back-to-school sales. In corporate news, Coca-Cola (KO) plans to invest $10 billion in US infrastructure from 2026 through 2030, including new and expanded production, distribution and office facilities, the company said Tuesday. The Coca-Cola system contributed $85 billion to the US economy in 2025 and supports nearly 1 million jobs, the company said. Its shares were down 0.4%. General Motors (GM) is launching a new user interface for its pickup trucks featuring the latest versions of Apple (AAPL) CarPlay and Android Auto and plans to deliver additional system enhancements via wireless software updates. GM shares fell 1.8%. Grab (GRAB) has agreed to buy a majority stake in the digital financial services platform of Singapore-based Advance Intelligence as the ride-hailing and delivery company looks to bolster its consumer lending business across Southeast Asia. Grab will purchase a 60% interest in buy-now, pay-later platform Atome Financial for $1.49 billion in cash, of which $260 million is "primary growth capital," it said Tuesday. Grab shares fell 3.2%.
