Novo Nordisk to Collaborate With Anthropic to Help Accelerate Drug Discovery, Development

03:08 PM EDT, 09/16/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Novo Nordisk (NVO) will collaborate with artificial intelligence firm Anthropic to help accelerate the discovery and development of new medicines, marking the Danish pharmaceutical giant's latest AI partnership. Novo plans to initially test Anthropic's Claude Science for specific workflows in research and development. The drugmaker will also use frontier models from the Claude generative AI chatbot maker to strengthen AI-driven software development, the companies said Wednesday. "This partnership is another testament to our ambition to become the world's most AI-driven healthcare company, building on Novo's current AI initiatives with other technology partners," Novo Chief Executive Mike Doustdar said. "Joining forces with Anthropic will supercharge our R&D organization and help us on our mission to bring new, transformative health solutions to people living with chronic diseases." Earlier this year, Novo announced similar partnerships with Amazon.com's (AMZN) cloud-computing unit, Amazon Web Services, and GenAI chatbot ChatGPT maker OpenAI. Novo previously struck partnerships with tech giants Nvidia (NVDA) and Microsoft (MSFT). Novo's American depositary receipts were down 2% in Wednesday late-afternoon trade, bringing its year-to-date losses to 18%. In May, Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY) and Anthropic struck a deal to deploy the Claude model across the biopharmaceutical company's global operations to accelerate drug discovery, trial documentation, and manufacturing workflows. "By giving leading researchers access to safe, capable, and trusted frontier models, we can shorten research timelines, improve outcomes, and discover medicines and treatments that significantly improve human life," Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said Wednesday. Amodei was among the leading AI executives that recently warned of increasing safety risks from the technology and urged the industry to advance AI model capabilities at a more measured pace.
