Kashkari says U.S. inflationary pressures have spread to multiple sectors of the economy

Minneapolis Federal Reserve President Neel Kashkari stated that U.S. inflation remains excessively high, with pressures extending beyond the oil price shocks caused by the Iran war and spreading into multiple sectors of the economy. He emphasized that the inflation felt by the American public every day is not just about oil prices, but pervades various aspects of the economy. Kashkari noted that the Federal Reserve is increasingly concerned that inflation is not limited to areas affected by Middle East conflicts or tariffs, as there are also signs of inflation in the service sector. He asserted that the Fed's responsibility is to bring inflation back to its target level, and it has the tools to achieve this goal. Kashkari was previously one of three dissenters to the July decision to keep rates unchanged, favoring a rate hike at the time and warning that waiting too long could entrench inflation, eventually requiring more aggressive measures. Kashkari believes that despite facing geopolitical tensions and trade issues, the U.S. economy continues to show considerable resilience and strength in the labor market. He hopes that as the effects of certain conflicts gradually diminish, economic growth will help drive the economy forward, accelerate the cooling of inflation, and thereby reduce pressure on Federal Reserve policy.
