Why MongoDB Stock Is Sinking 18% on a CEO Departure -- Barrons.com

Shares of MongoDB were taking a beating on Monday after the database company said its president and CEO had stepped down to lead a new business segment at Meta Platforms.

MongoDB stock fell 18% to $335.22 on Monday and was on pace for its largest daily percentage decline since March 3, according to Dow Jones Market Data. Meta stock, meanwhile, fell 4% to $721.57.

MongoDB said that Chirantan Desai had stepped down as president and CEO effective immediately to "pursue a senior role" at Meta Platforms. MongoDB added it has initiated a search process to identify the next permanent CEO.

The Facebook parent said separately Monday that Desai will join Meta as chief enterprise platform officer, leading the company's new enterprise platform and reporting directly to CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

It was a big stock market reaction for an announcement of a departing CEO, which generally results in just a modest positive or negative share price change.

There's at a least a couple reasons why the stock market reaction was different for MongoDB on Monday.

First was the shock factor. The decision by Desai to leave MongoDB after less than a year in the top job for, on the face of it, a demotion to join Meta came out of nowhere and left many on Wall Street dismayed.

"As evidenced by the market reaction, this is a real shocker," Guggenheim Securities analyst Howard Ma said in a research note.

But while Desai gave up the role of CEO to move further down the chain of command at Meta, there certainly are attractive aspects of his role.

Fresh off the successful launch of Muse, Meta's personal consumer artificial-intelligence agent, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a media release Monday that the company was launching the enterprise platform to "start the next major pillar of our business."

Zuckerberg said the new segment will help businesses use AI to "grow and transform in new ways" by turning Meta's AI stack into products and services that companies can deploy for their own businesses.

"Our goal is to make Meta the place enterprises come to scale their businesses. I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity and looking forward to working with our customers along this journey," Desai said in Meta's media release.

The chance to lead a new business opportunity at Meta might just have been too good of a chance to pass up for Desai.

Meta's gain, however, was MongoDB investors' loss on Monday as the proximity of the departure to the company's investor day event on Tuesday weighed on the stock.

Needham said Monday that Desai's departure was "unfortunate" given how close it came to MongoDB's investor day.

Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Thomas Blakey added in a research note that investor focus likely has quickly shifted to the investor day event on Tuesday with key questions being the durability of any long-term targets presented under interim leadership and the timeline for a permanent CEO appointment.

Even with the shock departure coming the day before the company's investor day, it wasn't all bad news for MongoDB.

The company appointed Dev Ittycheria as interim president and CEO. Ittycheria previously served as MongoDB president and CEO from 2014 to 2025. MongoDB also said it "remains confident" in the outlook for the business and reaffirmed its quarterly and fiscal-year guidance.

Ma, the Guggenheim analyst, said the "only slight positive news" for MongoDB on Monday was that Ittycheria will reassume leading MongoDB on an interim basis.

"There is no one that is better suited to run MongoDB," Ma said, who added that the share price decline Monday could offer an "attractive entry" into the stock.
