02:23 PM EDT, 09/29/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The Conference Board's consumer confidence Index fell to 81.9 in September from an 88.6 reading in August due to declines in both the present situation and expectations readings. The survey was conducted between Sept. 1 and Sept. 23, which covered the Federal Reserve's rate increase and continued tensions in the Middle East, the Conference Board noted. The FHFA home price index posted a 0.3% gain in July after a flat reading in June. The index was 2.6% higher than a year ago. Released at the same time, S&P Case-Shiller reported a 0.1% July home price gain, down from 0.4% in June. The index was up 1.9% year-over-year, up from the 1.6% rate in the previous month. August job openings data showed a sharp decline, while hiring was up only slightly. The Dallas Fed's services reading fell to minus 1.8 in September from 4.2 in August, indicating a return to contraction. Redbook reported that US same-store retail sales were up 8.2% year-over-year in the week ended Sept. 26, faster than a 7.6% gain in the prior week but with some disruption from the harsh storms in the Northeast.
