Netflix will release its financial report on October 20. The market expects that the benefit of price increases could significantly boost its operating profit margin, but the growth rate of core revenue is projected to continue declining.

According to Zhitong Finance APP, streaming giant Netflix (NFLX.US) will release its Q3 2026 earnings after the US market closes this Tuesday. With the company's share price having dropped by more than 22% this year, this earnings release is closely watched and seen by the market as a key event to test the resilience of its fundamentals. Based on current expectations, Netflix is experiencing a “split”: price hike benefits are set to drive a sharp increase in profit margins, but the downward trend in core revenue growth is hard to reverse.

Pricing Upside Materializes, Profit May Enter a "Highlight Moment"

In terms of earnings expectations, Netflix is expected to deliver a strong profit performance this quarter. The company has guided for an operating margin of 33.2% in Q3, a significant improvement from 28.2% in the same period last year. The market consensus for earnings per share (EPS) is $0.82.

The robust profit is mainly attributed to the lagging effect of its pricing strategy. In Q2, US and Canada (UCAN) revenue grew by 10%, but the pricing effect in the US, Mexico, and Spain was only partially reflected. This means the full quarterly benefit from higher prices will be realized in Q3. In addition, the company completed $4.7 billion in share buybacks in Q2, which directly supported per-share earnings.

However, the profit strength cannot obscure pressures on the revenue side. Netflix guides Q3 revenue at $12.86 billion, with Zacks consensus at $12.87 billion (up 11.84% year-over-year). This growth rate is a further slowdown from 13.4% in Q2. Meanwhile, Netflix is re-testing free trials outside the US and UK, which may cause some short-term monetization disruption.

Advertising Enters Monetization Phase, $3 Billion Target Still in Question

With subscriber growth maturing and room for further price hikes gradually narrowing, advertising is the most critical incremental driver in Netflix's valuation narrative over the long term.

Recent progress shows Netflix’s ad infrastructure has begun to take shape: in August, the company disclosed that ad commitments in pre-sales nearly doubled; its ad suite received its first certification from the Media Rating Council (MRC); and “Pause Ads” have been made available for programmatic buying across major platforms. These moves collectively support its 2026 advertising revenue goal of around $3 billion.

For investors, the key in this earnings report is not whether advertising revenue hits the target, but whether management can provide clearer guidance on the monetization pace. If ad revenue expansion can effectively offset rising content costs, it will become a key pillar supporting the valuation.

The “Ledger” of Live Content: 5% of Budget but Only 1% of View Time

To boost user growth and attract advertisers, Netflix has heavily invested in sports live streaming. In Q3, its content lineup included the MLB Home Run Derby, the Field of Dreams game, and the opening week of the NFL season.

However, the input-output efficiency of live content is becoming a market focus. The company expects live programming to consume just over 5% of its 2026 content budget but only contribute about 1% of view time. This stark disparity means that, at this stage, live streaming serves more as an acquisition and marketing tool rather than being a core pillar of viewership.

Investors will closely watch whether management can demonstrate that new subscriptions and advertising revenue brought by live content are sufficient to cover its high unit costs. At the same time, company data showing overall view time grew by only 2% in the first half of the year, together with fierce competition from streaming peers like Apple, Amazon, and Disney, add to the near-term headwinds for Netflix’s fundamentals.

Management Reshuffle and 2027 Guidance: Market Looks for Mid-Term Anchor Points

A special backdrop to this earnings report is Netflix’s announcement of two major adjustments days before the release: layoffs of about 1,000 employees (about 6% of its global staff) and a change of Chief Content Officer—former head of content Bela Bajaria stepping down and veteran Disney executive Peter Rice taking over.

Wedbush analysts believe these personnel and cost adjustments are aimed at addressing market concerns about user engagement and shifting expenditure from heavy infrastructure to more focused content; however, the pace of scaling up advertising revenue may lengthen as a result. In other words, the reorganization logically benefits mid-term efficiency but could add near-term execution uncertainties.

In the earnings call, management’s outlook for 2027 will be more important than Q3 data itself. Analysts will look for clues in three areas: room for pricing strategy, the pulling power of ad-supported plans, and whether content spending discipline can maintain competitiveness while supporting the profit margin targets. Netflix’s current guidance for full-year 2026 is revenue of $51–51.4 billion and an operating margin of 31.5%. Whether the reshuffled management will adjust this mid-term framework is a key factor to anticipate the stock’s reaction.

So far this year, Netflix shares have fallen 22.6%, while the Zacks Consumer Discretionary sector has dropped 19.6% over the same period. Amazon and Apple shares have risen by 10.2% and 25.8%, respectively.

The market only gives a 17% probability, but economists claim it's "fifty-fifty": Is the suspense over a Federal Reserve rate hike in October being seriously underestimated?

In September, the U.S. CPI rose 3.7% year-on-year, while the PPI surged to 6.3%. Additionally, prices of goods except for energy accelerated, indicating that inflation has structural stickiness. Based on this, several economists predict that the likelihood of a rate hike in October far exceeds market pricing, with some directly forecasting consecutive hikes in October and December. Despite being just six days away from the midterm elections, a politically sensitive period, if the Federal Reserve unexpectedly acts to curb inflation, it will severely impact a market that is currently unprepared.

Anthropic allocates 5% equity to establish a public welfare fund in response to the impact of AI on the job market

Anthropic also announced the implementation of a dynamic increment mechanism—whenever the valuation rises 50% above the baseline, the board can allocate an additional 2% of shares. Combined with the founders and employees’ donation plan, about 20% of shares will be used for public interest purposes. This comes as Anthropic plans for an IPO in November and reported $16.8 billion in revenue for Q3, with industry insiders seeing this as a strategic move balancing necessity and image.
