The "Future Investment Initiative" summit in Saudi Arabia, known as the "Desert Davos," has announced its postponement. The 10th edition of the event, originally scheduled to take place in Riyadh from October 26 to 29, has been postponed until 2027. The delay is due to ongoing attacks by Houthi forces targeting locations within Saudi Arabia, including Riyadh Airport and the Saudi Aramco headquarters. According to the draft agenda, planned attendees included senior executives from financial giants such as Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and Blackstone.

The flagship investment conference of Saudi Arabia, the Future Investment Initiative (FII), has announced its postponement due to the worsening security situation in the Middle East, making it impossible for this global financial event known as the "Davos in the Desert" to be held as planned. This casts a shadow over Saudi Arabia’s ambition to position itself as a global business hub.

On October 19, the organizers issued a statement confirming that the 10th FII conference, originally scheduled for October 26–29 in Riyadh, will be postponed to 2027, and stated that a new specific date will be announced "very soon".

The statement said the postponement is to ensure this "significant milestone event can achieve the scale, quality, and impact expected by partners, members, speakers, and delegates."

This postponement comes after a series of attacks on targets within Saudi Arabia by the Houthi armed group. On October 10, Houthi militants attacked King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, resulting in at least 12 to 18 deaths and over 300 injuries.

Since then, the Houthis have continued to carry out missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia, affecting military, energy, and civilian infrastructure, including the headquarters of Saudi Aramco.

Financial Titans Were Scheduled to Attend, Security Concerns Force Plans to Be Shelved

This year’s Future Investment Initiative originally boasted a star-studded guest list.

According to the draft agenda, scheduled attendees included Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon, Standard Chartered CEO Bill Winters, Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser, as well as JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman, and BlackRock CEO Larry Fink—all heavyweights in the financial world.

According to Reuters, several major banks and private equity institutions have privately expressed to the President of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), Yasir Al-Rumayyan, their concerns about conference security. It is reported some attendees and speakers originally planned to fly first to Bahrain and then drive about five hours to Riyadh to avoid the risks of direct flights.

The organizers had also considered emergency options such as hybrid and online participation. As recently as last week, they announced preparations to "welcome thousands of delegates to Riyadh," but ultimately had to announce the postponement.

Eight Years of "Future Investment Initiative" Achievements, Postponement Deals a Blow to Saudi Economic Transformation Strategy

The "Future Investment Initiative" was founded by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund in 2017 and has grown into a core platform for driving economic diversification and attracting foreign investment in Saudi Arabia.

At the inaugural conference, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced the ambitious NEOM megaproject. Al-Rumayyan once stated that since the initiative’s inception, deals facilitated by FII have totalled over $250 billion, with over $50 billion in agreements reached in 2025 alone.

The cancellation is a significant setback for Saudi Arabia. The country is vigorously advancing a multi-trillion-dollar economic transformation plan, dedicated to reducing dependence on oil and expanding into tourism, sports, technology and other sectors, and it urgently needs to continue attracting global investment and attention.

This postponement reflects the broader impact of the expansion of the US–Iran war into the Middle East region.

According to Reuters, since the beginning of the year, numerous conferences in the UAE and Qatar have been cancelled, postponed, or changed in format due to the security situation. Saudi Arabia had been relatively less affected, but as the intensity of Houthi attacks has recently escalated, the situation has become noticeably more tense.

The postponement of the Future Investment Initiative is the latest example of business activities in the Gulf region being hindered by geopolitical risk, and again signals to the market that changes in Middle East security are becoming a major variable affecting the business environment and investor confidence in the region.
