Super Micro Computer Exceeds Expectations, "AI Stocks" Rebound, and "Server Giants" Dell and HPE Surge
Super Micro Computer expects quarterly revenue for the period ending September 30 to reach $18.5–19.5 billion, a year-over-year surge of 279% and about 27% higher than previous guidance, with gross margin also rising to 12%–12.5%. The stock price soared 15% after hours, while Dell Technologies rose about 6% and Hewlett Packard Enterprise increased about 5% after hours. Analysts pointed out that this data confirms strong demand for AI computing power, and the full financial report will be released on November 3.
A surprising earnings forecast from Super Micro Computer has delivered a shot in the arm to the long-pressured AI sector. The AI server manufacturer's preliminary financial data far exceeded market expectations, not only boosting its own stock price but also sending the entire AI industry chain soaring in after-hours trading.
On Tuesday (October 20), Super Micro Computer's stock price surged more than 15% in after-hours trading. The company expects quarterly revenue for the period ending September 30 to reach $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion, well above the previous guidance range of $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion and significantly higher than the Bloomberg-compiled analyst consensus of about $15 billion. The midpoint of the revenue range implies a year-on-year growth rate of 279%. Meanwhile, the gross margin is expected to reach 12% to 12.5%, also better than the previous estimate of 10.4% to 10.8%.

The spillover effect of this earnings forecast quickly spread to peers. Dell Technologies rose about 6% in after-hours trading, while Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) climbed about 5%—both companies had suffered sharp declines last week. Emerging cloud computing companies CoreWeave and Nebius Group both gained more than 4%, VanEck Semiconductor ETF rose by 2.2%, and Invesco QQQ Trust, which tracks the Nasdaq 100 index, reached a gain of up to 0.9%.

Earnings Highlights: Revenue and Gross Margin Exceed Expectations
Super Micro Computer’s released “preliminary earnings update” focused on several core financial indicators. On the revenue side, the expected range of $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion represents an approximate 27% upward revision from previous guidance, demonstrating that AI demand is driving strong growth for the company's business.
The improvement in gross margin has also caught market attention. According to MarketWatch, Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani noted in his research report that a gross margin of 12% to 12.5% is “an impressive result” for Super Micro Computer, especially considering that competitor Dell Technologies has traditionally enjoyed a pricing premium in the AI server field. He wrote that Super Micro Computer’s data is a positive signal for Dell and HPE: “The combination of revenue outperformance and better-than-expected margins is especially noteworthy.”
Daryanani also commented, “We view this update as a positive data point for AI compute demand.”
It is worth noting that Super Micro Computer’s release is only preliminary data with limited disclosure; the full financial report is expected to be released together with the official quarterly results on November 3.
Daryanani pointed out that several key questions remain unresolved. Of greatest concern: In this quarter’s business, what proportion of Super Micro Computer’s orders come from large cloud companies compared to emerging cloud providers like CoreWeave and SpaceX? This structural issue will directly impact market judgment on the sustainability of demand for AI infrastructure.
Dell and HPE Follow the Rally, Reviving Industry Chain Sentiment
Super Micro Computer’s earnings forecast has significantly lifted the entire server and AI infrastructure supply chain. Both Dell and HPE are direct competitors with Super Micro Computer in the computing equipment field, and their after-hours share prices rose approximately 6% and 5% respectively.
Wallstreet News article wrote that on the same day, Elon Musk’s SpaceX also reported quarterly revenue and profit above expectations, driven by its AI and satellite internet businesses. SpaceX’s after-hours price surged 8%, further boosting market sentiment.

This forecast from Super Micro Computer comes at a particularly sensitive moment for the AI sector, which has been under overall pressure. Since the beginning of this month, concerns about the continued rapid expansion of AI computing infrastructure have been mounting; the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 11% in October, on track for its worst monthly performance since July.
Under heavy pressure, neocloud companies, whose business model is based on leasing compute power, have been hit first. CoreWeave, which funds its infrastructure through bond issuance, saw its share price down 29% this month as of Tuesday’s close.
Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury yields have been rising continuously this year, further increasing the cost of debt financing, which is increasingly a crucial funding source supporting the expansion of AI spending.

"The aluminum tycoon" is back, this time betting on copper!
Veteran metals trader Sonny McNess at Hartree Partners has heavily bought LME October copper contracts and shorted November contracts, betting that Trump's tariffs on refined copper will trigger a surge in near-month premiums.
