UBS: Trading Strategies for Current Interest Rate Fluctuations

UBS believes that expectations of Federal Reserve rate hikes have become the main driver of rising interest rates. The local peaks in the 10-year yield and interest rate volatility are key for the stock market. If rate hikes over the next year are less than 100 basis points, the MSCI Global Index and S&P 500 tend to rise on average by 8% to 10% over the following six months, and by 15% to 18% in the next year.In terms of trading strategies, it is suggested to buy out-of-the-money S&P 500 call options towards the end of the year to take advantage of eased pressures and the potential for broad rallies not yet priced in due to midterm election risks. For hedging, swap S&P 500 put options for utility sector put options, and buy downside structures in high-yield bond ETFs to deal with both yield and spread risks. Regionally, there is a preference for the S&P 500 over the FTSE 100, and Korea over India. The recommended industry allocation is to increase weight in US utilities and industrials, and European industrials, while reducing energy exposure. Go long on high-growth, cash-generative US stocks trading at a discount, as well as European renewable energy stocks.Source: UBS, "Risks vs fundamentals: where are the asymmetries?", October 20, 2026 For the full report, see the link below.
