  Key Points

  • Uber Eats launched an artificial intelligence tool on Wednesday that allows users to generate shopping cart items via text or images.
  • The company continues to add AI features to its platform, having already introduced AI-generated menu descriptions and user review summaries last year.
  • Uber is competing with Instacart in the fresh grocery delivery market.

Uber Eats is bringing artificial intelligence to your next shopping list.

The ride-hailing company Uber announced on Wednesday that its food delivery platform has launched a brand new AI Shopping Assistant, allowing consumers to generate shopping cart items directly through text or images (such as handwritten shopping lists).

Uber stated that the feature is now integrated with dozens of major retailers, including Safeway, Albertsons, and Kroger. The tool automatically considers user preferences and store inventory, and it allows users to modify their selected items.

Uber’s CTO, Pravin Nepali Naga, said in a statement:

“The cart assistant reflects Uber’s philosophy on artificial intelligence: starting from real user needs to build practical solutions within the app. By basing features on actual user behavior, we can create truly useful and intuitive tools.”

Uber and its competitors in the food delivery and ride-hailing industry are continuously adding AI features to enhance the platform experience for users and merchants. In July last year, Uber launched new tools for restaurants, including AI-generated menu descriptions and user review summaries.

Both Uber and DoorDash have aggressively expanded into the fresh grocery delivery sector, directly challenging Instacart. Both companies launched these services during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. In recent months, Uber has continued to expand its partners, including Aldi, FreshDirect, and others; just last week, it announced five new partner stores.

In the fourth quarter, Uber's delivery business saw total bookings increase by 26% year-on-year, reaching $25.4 billion.
