Omdia: Africa's smartphone market to grow moderately by 3% in Q1 2026, while overall conditions continue to weaken
- The Omdia research report points out that driven by new product launches and early stocking by major manufacturers, the African smartphone market grew by 3% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026, reaching 19.9 million units.
- Despite achieving moderate growth, the mobile phone market environment in many African economies continues to weaken due to rising component prices, exchange rate fluctuations, and increasing pressure on purchasing power in the sub-$150 price segment.
- The underlying demand in the African market still shows structural resilience, stemming from the growth in connectivity needs, the popularization of digital services, and a young, mobile-first population structure; however, worsening economic and operational pressures are making consumers and manufacturers face increasing challenges in terms of purchasing power.
