Uphold launches fractional share trading for over 4,000 US stocks

Uphold, the multi-asset trading platform that built its reputation on crypto, offers fractional share trading covering US stocks and ETFs. The move turns Uphold into something closer to a financial supermarket, where users can toggle between Bitcoin, gold, and Apple shares without switching apps.

From crypto rails to stock tickers

Uphold first introduced fractional US equities around 2020, letting users buy slivers of high-priced stocks like Apple and Tesla without needing to cough up hundreds of dollars per share.

The regulatory groundwork was laid in 2021, when Uphold acquired US broker-dealer JNK Securities. That deal came with FINRA approval, giving Uphold the licenses it needed to offer securities trading within a compliant framework.

Fractional trading itself isn’t revolutionary at this point. Robinhood, Fidelity, and Charles Schwab all offer it. But the context here matters. Uphold isn’t a traditional brokerage bolting on crypto. It’s a crypto-native platform bolting on traditional finance, and that distinction shapes who uses it and why.

Why crypto users should care about stock access

The fractional component is equally important. Some of the most popular stocks trade at prices that feel prohibitive for smaller accounts. Fractional shares let someone put $25 into a stock trading at $500, effectively democratizing access to equities that would otherwise require meaningful capital commitment.

The competitive landscape is getting crowded

Robinhood started as a stock trading app and added crypto. Interactive Brokers did the same. eToro has offered both for years. Now crypto-first platforms like Uphold are moving in the opposite direction, adding equities to their existing digital asset infrastructure.

The FINRA-approved broker-dealer license obtained through the JNK Securities acquisition is a meaningful differentiator among crypto-native competitors. Not every crypto platform has the regulatory clearance to offer securities.
