Hyatt Swings to 2Q Profit, Posts Higher Revenue

Hyatt swung to a second-quarter profit and reported higher revenue, as continued demand for luxury travel helped offset regional and geopolitical headwinds.

The hotel operator on Thursday posted a profit of $110 million, or $1.14 a share. That compares with a loss of $3 million, or 3 cents a share, in the same quarter last year.

Stripping out certain one-time items, earnings came in at $1.12 a share. Analysts polled by FactSet expected adjusted earnings of 91 cents a share.

Total revenue ticked up 1.2% to $1.83 billion, roughly in line with Wall Street estimates.

Comparable revenue per available room--or RevPar, an important metric in the hospitality industry--decreased 1.2%. The company attributed the decline to softer demand, in part due to security concerns in Mexico and lower airlift into certain destinations.

The war in the Middle East also hurt RevPar, Hyatt said, noting the decline was partially offset by continued demand for luxury and upscale travel.

Average daily rates were up 1.7%, while occupancy ebbed 2.1%.

"The resilience of our core fee business enabled us to absorb temporary regional headwinds," Chief Executive Mark Hoplamazian said.

Looking ahead, Hyatt said it now expects comparable RevPar to be up between 3.5% and 4.5% for the year, compared with a prior of up 2% to 4%. The company also trimmed its profit forecast to between $250 million and $335 million, compared with previous guidance for $255 million to $350 million.
