(1) The yield on the US 10-year Treasury has risen to its highest level in nearly 20 years, marking the latest milestone in a global bond selloff driven by surging energy prices, concerns over debt, and inflation. (2) On Tuesday, the yield on this Treasury rose by 3 basis points to 5.02%, surpassing its 2023 peak and reaching its highest level since 2007. (3) The latest movement comes after global oil prices climbed due to heightened Middle Eastern supply risks. Since the United States launched an attack on Iran at the end of February, disrupting Middle Eastern oil and gas supplies, global bond yields have continued to rise. (4) There are other factors as well, such as corporations borrowing massively to fund artificial intelligence spending, which is injecting large amounts of debt into the market and further stimulating the already resilient US economy.
