On Wednesday, the MSCI Asia-Pacific Index rose by 0.2%, making a slight rebound from the low point reached on Tuesday, the lowest since August. South Korea's Composite Index briefly rose by over 2%. SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics both surged more than 3% during trading, then fell back. The Nikkei 225 expanded its gains to 0.53%. MLCC giant Taiyo Yuden led the AI hardware sector, while Fujikura rose nearly 4%. The yield on 10-year US Treasury futures remained at 5.21%, up 0.5 basis points from Tuesday.

Asia-Pacific stock markets stabilized and rebounded on Wednesday after two consecutive days of declines, led by the technology and semiconductor sectors, following dovish signals from New York Federal Reserve President John Williams that boosted market sentiment.

The MSCI Asia Pacific stock index rose 0.2% on Wednesday, while South Korea's KOSPI Index surged before paring gains; the Nikkei 225 opened higher, rising about 0.5%. However, the Australian S&P/ASX 200 fell nearly 1%, showing relative weakness.

Williams stated that he does not see the need for further monetary tightening by 2027, but still views one more rate hike this year as appropriate. This stance eased market concerns about further rate hikes and gave a breather to Asian tech stocks.

Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury yields remained elevated and oil prices continued their upward momentum, with investors focusing on the upcoming release of U.S. September CPI data later in the day.

According to a Dow Jones survey, economists expect inflation to rise to 3.6% year-over-year, up from 3.4% previously. Persistently high oil and rising gasoline prices add uncertainty to the inflation outlook and are a core market concern.

Asia-Pacific Stocks Rebound, Tech and Chip Sectors Lead

Williams' comments disrupted the pessimism that had dominated the market over the previous two days. The MSCI Asia-Pacific Technology Index led the rebound, driving the overall index higher.

Wallstreet Insights mentioned that on Tuesday, New York Fed President John Williams, known as the Fed’s “third-in-command” with a permanent FOMC vote, sent out explicit long-term “dovish” signals. Williams stated:

I have not changed my view that one more rate hike may be appropriate. I do not see, at this time, any reason to believe we will need to do more after that.

When asked about the long-term (such as 2027) rate hike path, he noted that further hikes would not be necessary then. Josh Gilbert, Chief Analyst at eToro Asia-Pacific, commented:

Expectations of fewer Fed rate hikes provided breathing space for Asian equities today. Williams’ comments downplaying an extended tightening cycle helped ease yield pressure, which is good news for Asian tech stocks.

The MSCI Asia-Pacific Index rose 0.2% on Wednesday, rebounding slightly from the lows touched on Tuesday since August. The KOSPI once gained more than 2%, but then pared gains to less than 0.5%. The KOSPI had previously declined for five consecutive days.

In Japan, the technology and industrial manufacturing sectors saw a strong rebound. The Nikkei 225 opened higher and extended gains to 0.53%.

The AI and semiconductor supply chains became the focus of the session. MLCC giant TAIYO YUDEN surged 7.32% to lead the AI hardware sector. Furukawa Electric, benefiting from demand for optical communications for data centers, followed closely, rising 3.71%. Meanwhile, SoftBank Group, a bellwether for global tech and AI investment, was also active, gaining more than 2%.

Upstream high-end materials and chemical sectors also performed well. Leading semiconductor packaging materials and fine chemical companies Risen Noko Holdings (+3.23%), Sumitomo Chemical (+2.98%), Tokuyama (+2.30%), and Mitsui Chemicals (+1.95%) all posted gains.

Overall, the rise in Asia-Pacific sessions showed a clear multi-sector linkage effect of “AI hardware + electronic components + key semiconductor materials,” marking a notable rebound in market risk appetite. Technology growth and cyclical materials shares together formed the main support for today’s market.

Oil Prices Extend Gains, Bond Yields Hold High

In commodities and the bond market, crude oil prices continued to climb.

During Asia-Pacific trading on Wednesday, WTI crude rose over 1% to about $95.22 per barrel, its fifth consecutive day of gains; Brent crude also rose over 1%. Ongoing tensions in the Middle East and increased uncertainty around energy shipping are seen as the main factors supporting oil prices.

The average U.S. retail gasoline price currently stands at about $4.34 per gallon, a sharp increase from $3.08 a year ago. Although Trump announced last week a temporary relaxation of restrictions on Russian diesel exports, analysts generally believe this will have limited effect on lowering fuel prices.

In the bond market, the yield on 10-year U.S. Treasury futures remains at 5.21%, up slightly by 0.5 basis points from Tuesday; Australia’s 10-year government bond yield rose 4 basis points to 5.33%; and Japan’s 10-year yield edged up to 3.015%.
