XRP network burns 1,115 tokens in a day, highest rate in over two weeks

More than 1,114 XRP were permanently removed from circulation within a single day, according to data from XRPScan, signaling a recent surge in network activity.

XRP burn rate jumps sharply

Data showed that 1,114.97 XRP were burned as transaction fees on October 23, representing a 27.5% increase from the previous day’s total of 874.27 XRP. This marked the highest daily burn rate recorded in more than two weeks. The spike comes after a period of subdued activity on the XRP Ledger, with the 30-day average standing at 808.1 XRP burned daily.

Date XRP Burned
October 22 874.27
October 23 1,114.97
30-day Average 808.1

The current surge in daily burn activity follows the largest spike this month, when more than 8,000 XRP were removed from supply on October 2. Since then, the number of tokens burned each day has continued to fluctuate, influenced by broader trends in network utilization.

Increased network participation

The XRP Ledger, the decentralized infrastructure that facilitates XRP transactions, reduces the total supply by automatically burning a small amount of tokens as a transaction fee with each operation. This process provides not only a check on spam but also makes the asset incrementally more scarce as the network sees higher activity.

Mini dictionary: XRPScan is a third-party blockchain explorer that provides real-time transaction data and analytics for the XRP Ledger, helping users monitor network activity and onchain metrics.

Historically, spikes in the burn rate reflect an uptick in transactions processed on the network. The mechanism not only demonstrates user engagement but can also influence sentiments about XRP’s scarcity in the market.

Network data revealed that a sharp increase in XRP token burns coincided with a noticeable uptick in onchain activity, pushing daily burned amounts well above recent averages.

Market implications

Although XRP’s price has shown mixed movement in recent sessions, analysts often interpret increased burn rates and network activity as constructive signals for the asset’s outlook. While higher burn levels do not directly cause price rises, they contribute to increased scarcity over time, which can positively impact long-term demand.

The XRP Ledger’s use of transaction-based burning continues to offer a transparent method of supply reduction, with daily figures serving as an important real-time indicator of network usage.
