According to the official website of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, since May, egg prices have risen for five consecutive weeks. This year, egg prices have defied the seasonal trend, not only breaking through the usual patterns but also showing a “week-on-week increase” in May. Several industry insiders believe that this is mainly due to previous production capacity reductions leading to decreased supply, as well as the concentrated release of phased demand.
Egg prices remained low in 2025, resulting in a scale-down of farming operations and the elimination of laying hens on the supply side, causing tight supply this year and becoming a significant reason for the current price increase. From a supply and demand perspective, the production reduction caused by earlier losses has a lagging effect. When the supply gap widens further during the peak demand season, price elasticity rapidly intensifies. Low inventories in production areas have further strengthened the sellers’ pricing power.
Industry insiders predict that egg prices still have room to rise before the Dragon Boat Festival, though the upward momentum is gradually weakening. In the second half of 2026, egg prices may “remain high with periodic fluctuations.” From a trading psychology standpoint, after continued profitability, farmers may gradually restock, while the end-market’s acceptance of high-priced eggs will test the resilience of demand. In the future, attention will focus on the pace of restocking in production areas and whether inventories will accumulate again after holiday stockpiling ends.
