Real-world asset market reaches $25B as DeFi TVL crosses $3B milestone
The market for tokenized real-world assets has quietly ballooned to roughly $25 billion in total market cap, a figure that would have sounded delusional two years ago. Today it sounds like a floor.
Treasuries are the main character
Of that $25 billion, tokenized US Treasuries account for approximately $16 billion, representing over 55% of the entire RWA market.
BlackRock’s BUIDL fund sits at the center of this trend. The tokenized money market product has accumulated roughly $2.98 billion in assets, making it the single largest tokenized product as of May 2026.
The broader DeFi landscape tied to specific chains and RWA subsectors has seen total value locked reach around $3 billion, a milestone that puts RWA protocols ahead of some decentralized exchange categories in DeFi rankings.
Ethereum dominates, BNB Chain is gaining
Ethereum remains the undisputed home for tokenized real-world assets, with its RWA token market surpassing $17 billion. That figure represents a roughly 315% increase year-over-year, up from approximately $4.1 billion.
BNB Chain’s RWA TVL has reached $3 billion, with $1 billion of that added in Q1 2026 alone.
From niche to infrastructure
Some projections estimate that the total value locked in tokenized RWAs could exceed $500 billion by the end of 2026, up from roughly $35 billion in 2025.
What this means for investors
The competitive landscape also deserves attention. BlackRock’s dominance with the BUIDL fund creates a benchmark that smaller issuers will need to match on fees, transparency, and distribution.
The risk side of the equation centers on regulatory uncertainty in key markets, the potential for smart contract vulnerabilities in newer tokenization platforms, and the concentration of assets in a relatively small number of products. If nearly $3 billion sits in a single fund, the operational risk profile of that fund’s infrastructure becomes systemically relevant.

Jensen Huang immediately expressed agreement, stating that he "won't let (an AI slowdown) happen." However, these strong statements failed to boost the market, as Nvidia's stock fell by 3.4% that day, with tech stocks overall trending lower.
